"Letting you go" by Anouska Knight is an extract piece recommended by Netgalley and due for publication in September 2015.
The story starts with the main character, Alex frantically racing to the main road to find her dad. There has been a terrible accident involving her younger brother, Dill down by the river and she doesn't know what to do. When her dad arrives at the scene, her boyfriend Finn is assisting Dill but it doesn't look good. All Alex can do is watch and wait, but she knows from this day on things will never be the same again.
The story moves on to a grown up Alex living away from home and her new life but she can never forget that awful day nearly ten years ago. Alex speaks to her family on the phone but not as often as she should do. When she does the conversation between her mother and sister, Jamie is witty, loving and emotional. Alex's father also maintains contact but she cannot bring herself to relive that day and so it continues to be an unspoken issue between the two of them.
During the call, Alex also learns that her old boyfriend, Finn has returned to their hometown. This throws her upside down as she doesn't know how her father will react especially as Finn is opening up a store opposite his garage! Alex knows that she needs to confront her demons about the accident, Finn and everything else but she's not sure if she will ever be ready.
A few days after her recent call home, whilst attending her weekly swimming class, Alex receives numerous missed calls from Jamie. When she does eventually return the call she receives some devastating news which threatens to blow her world apart, her mother is very ill and in a critical condition. Jamie then confirms Alex's worst fear- she has to return home!
This story was so intriguing I wanted to continue reading on to find out what happens. The ending had a brilliant cliffhanger and left me with lots of unanswered questions such as will Alex do the right thing and return home? how will she face her father? what will it be like to see Finn again? will her mother be ok?
I think this book was an excellent read and I will definitely be ordering my copy to see how the story plays out!
