I finished reading this book a little while ago but just didn't get around to writing my review.
Title: Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda
Author: Becky Albertalli
Publication date: 07/04/15
Genre: Young Adult
Book Blurb
Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.
With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.
My review
When I first heard about this book I wasn't sure I was going to like it. But as the saying goes "never judge a book by it's cover" as this certainly wasn't the case.
Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda was a delightful coming of age, coming out of the closest story which had me entertained from start to finish! I enjoyed the cat and mouse games between Simon and Martin and the tension when Martin finally sent the email revealing all about Simon's status. The relationship between Simon and his friends-Nick, Leah and Abbey (the love of Martin's life) was loving and genuine and made you feel that you wanted to be part of their friendship. It was also quite a surprise to find out who Blue was in the end but I'm glad everything worked out for him and Simon!
This book was a refreshing read which dealt with the issues of homosexuality, blackmail and friendship in a mature and realistic manner. I would definitely recommend this book to booklovers and young people and would love to read a sequel about Simon and his new love!!
5 out of 5 stars.
