"Breathe and Release" by Katherine Hayton was recommended to me by Netgalley.
Genre: Thriller
After a horrific car crash, Elisabet wakes from a coma with her memory completely erased. Whilst in hospital, she is visited by her husband,Graham and step-daughter, Kristen who are trying to help her piece things together but Elisabet gets the feeling that all is not what it seems with her new family.
A few miles away, Lillian is tied up and being held captive underground in a damp, dark cellar with no recollection of how she got there or why. All she knows is that she hasn't drank or eaten for a number of days, has cuts and bruises all over her body and cannot find anyway out of her living hell.
As days go by , various images keep flashing in Elisabet's mind and there's one that she can't seem to get away from- a woman in a dark room, suffering, hurt and crying out for help. Is this someone linked to Elisabet's past? Does she know the woman in the room? Why does she want Elisabet's help in particular? Elisabet doesn't have the answers but she knows she has got to do her best to find out with or without her memory.
This book was a gripping thriller which had me intrigued having read the first few pages! The main character, Elisabet holds a dark secret which you are not aware of until the end of the book and it comes as such a surprise that you feel you should have spotted it earlier. Elisabet's step-daughter, Kristen doesn't care for her step-mother and would had preferred it if she never actually came around from the accident! However, as the story progresses and Elisabet's continuous warmth and care embraces Kristen she lets down her guard and attempts to re-connect with the woman who she initially wanted dead. Elisabet's husband, Graham is portrayed as a violent bully who turns nasty once Elisabet is released from hospital but as the story warms up you gradually learn that Graham is not the only violent one in the family!
"Breathe and Release" had a consistent flow which not only kept you up to date with the storyline but kept you wanting to read more and more! There were quite a few spelling errors across the book but I'm sure these will be rectified in the final published copy.
This is a superb read for anyone interested in thriller and suspense and is 100% on my list of recommended books!!
